Warsaw to recognize Kosovar independence
Poland has begun the procedure if recognising the independence of Kosovo.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting this morning during which the Polish head of diplomacy asked the government to acknowledge the independence of the new Balkan state.
Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that a common stand of the Premier and President has to be worked out before the final decision. Both politicians will meet on Wednesday, while the cabinet discussion on the issue is planned for next week.
Minister Sikorski underlined that the government considers the situation of Kosovo as unique and recognising the independence of this state should not be a precedent allowing other regions aspiring to independence to follow.
The head of diplomacy pointed that Poland is aware of the risk stemming from the destabilisation of the Balkans, but admitted that an independent Kosovo may be an attempt to pullout form the stalemate that reigns in the region for years.
