Do you know Krakow Cribs? They are very popular in Poland!
Before Christmas in December hundreds of Krakow citizens and tourists, viewed a display of traditional Krakow's Christmas Cribs called "szopki", an event organized annually in the main market square on the first Thursday in December.
The display and contest make one of the biggest festivities to be held before December holidays. Dozens of colorful, richly decorated cribs modeled on the architecture of Krakow's Basilica of St. Mary are placed around the statue of Adam Mickiewicz against the silhouette of the two tall towers of St. Mary's in the background.
The contestants, most of whom are Cracovians, but some come from as far away as Chicago, make their szopki from a variety of materials: from cardboard and foil to dough, fabric and even peas. After the noon “hejnal” bugle call, the szopka makers carry their cribs around the market square to the Historical Museum where the szopki await the verdict of the jury. The winning szopki are then exhibited in the Historical Museum
Cribs are very popular in Christmas time in POland not only those famouse Krakow one's but also simply wood cribs of Bethlem Crib as symbor of born Jesus :) Lots of cities making so called ''live cribs'' where you can find real people and animals in - its a very good fun especially for youngers.
